The Simplicity of Following Christ

In this week's Bible study, we explored a question many believers have asked at one point or another: What does God actually require of us?

Over time, following Christ can begin to feel complicated. People often associate spirituality with positions, programs, traditions, appearances, or a growing list of expectations. It can leave sincere people wondering if they are doing enough or measuring up.

Yet when Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, His answer was remarkably simple.

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind... And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

Jesus said that all the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. Everything else flows from there.

The study looked at how easily people can add burdens that Christ never intended. Jesus warned about religious leaders who placed heavy loads on others while missing the heart of what God desired. In contrast, Jesus offered something entirely different: "My yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

That does not mean following Christ requires no sacrifice. It means His way is not built upon endless rules and human expectations. It is built upon relationship.

To love God with all our heart means more than simply believing in Him. It means continually asking, "Would this please the Lord?" It affects our thoughts, our words, our decisions, and our responses to the situations we face every day. It is a life that seeks to know Him and honor Him.

The second commandment is equally searching. Loving our neighbor is often easier to talk about than to practice. That is why Jesus answered the question, "Who is my neighbor?" with the parable of the Good Samaritan. Rather than drawing lines around who deserved compassion, Jesus pointed to the one who showed mercy.

The lesson was clear. The question is not, "Who am I required to love?" The question is, "Am I becoming the kind of person who shows the love of God wherever I go?"

This is where following Christ becomes transformative. It is not merely about checking boxes or meeting requirements. It is about becoming more like Him. As we learn what He loves, we begin to love those things. As we learn His heart, our own hearts begin to change.

That transformation does not happen overnight. It happens day by day, decision by decision, as we choose to trust Him, follow His leading, and walk in love.

The simplicity of Christianity is also its challenge. Love God with everything that is in you. Love your neighbor as yourself. Let those two truths shape every part of your life.

When they do, following Christ becomes less about carrying burdens and more about walking with the One who promised to carry them with us.

“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
